WI Gov Evers, GOP, Recommend Transportation Funding Sources

WI Governor Tony Evers’ Transportation Stakeholder Task Force has narrowed in on several sources of transportation related revenue this week including:

• A 5.5 cent fuel tax increase and a return of indexing
• An unspecified vehicle registration fee increase
A vehicle miles traveled tax
An excise tax on motor fuel
Tolling

The Governor’s Task Force has not made concrete recommendations about transportation policy outside of revenue increases. It is unknown whether they will do so in the future.

Meanwhile, Republican leaders in both the Senate and Assembly embraced tolling as a way to generate more transportation related revenue. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said they want to target tolling on state-funded roads and bridges because it would avoid the need to seek federal permission to toll, a process which can be challenging.
